This season, I wish you all joy. Not happiness. Joy. Moments of joy, in my view, trumps the near-mythical state of happiness most of us claim to be in.
Joy is losing 5 pounds. It’s getting a parking space near the elevator. It’s a clean email inbox. It’s a good night’s sleep. It’s a romantic kiss. It’s a home run. It’s a perfect quiz. It’s a great cup of coffee. It’s a happy customer. It’s a compliment from someone who means it. It’s finding a thousand peso bill hidden in your purse two days before payday. It’s a good laugh. It’s your child falling asleep in your arms. It’s fast Internet. It’s finding heels that don’t hurt. It’s a free pizza. It’s a tagged photo on Facebook where you look gorgeous. It’s an answered prayer.
To my beloved family and friends, no matter what the next year brings, I wish you a truckload of joy. I wish you the child-like eyes to recognize these moments; and the whimsy to celebrate them.
